Message The Amsoil filter....

Carl has the dimensions but if I remember correctly the filter
media was of decent length. The filter itself was brutally
hard to disassemble, far and away the hardest of any we
disassembled. It had the typical features but the center
core had some seriously small holes in it, much fewer and
of far less area than all but the Fram.

The Fram X2

We thought this one might be interesting since it cost quite
a bit, and it didn't disappoint. It had a very short filter element
but it was far and away the most unique. It was a sort of
cotton gauze backed up by a mesh screen. I have no idea
how this thing would actually filter. The core had quite a lack
of holes in it compared to the Nissan and Nippon filters.

The group shot (doesn't include the Amsoil)

First is the Fram X2, the regular Fram, the Nissan 55Y00, the Nissan 60U00, the Nippon 55Y00, and the Nippon 60U00.

The things to look for here are the filter media and the
construction of the core of the filter. The Nissan and Nippon
filters generally have nearly identical filter media while the
regular Fram had some very thin paper. Of course there is
the X2 which is unlike the rest.

Nippon core (left) vs Nissan core (right)

I think it goes without saying that the Nippon isn't going to
cause any problems with an inability to flow oil....

Nippon filter media vs Nissan filter media..

The angles aren't perfect....the Nissan filter material is a
little thicker than the Nippon material. Although the Nippon
filters tend to pack more total filter material into the filter
than the Nissan filter......results...either would work...which
works best....toss up and the results would probably be
so similar as to not matter.

Note......the Oil filters directory is full of big and small oil filter pics if you
are really bored and want to look at oil filters

In conclusion....we (the 5-8) of us that were there for these
interesting filter disassembly sessions decided the Nippon
filter was fine, the Nissan 55Y00 was not going to blow up
a motor, and the Nissan 60U00 is probably the best to have,
just for the peace of mind of having what it did in 91.

I will say.....I wouldn't put a Fram anything on my Z.

I don't think we ever got around to destroying a Pure One.
